Almond Blossom Bookmark

Van Gogh painted Almond Blossom in February 1890, in Saint-Rémy, as a gift. His brother Theo had just written to say that his son had been born and would be named Vincent, after him. So Vincent painted blossom — the first tree to flower in Provence, the earliest possible sign of new life — against a sky of that extraordinary blue.

It's one of his gentlest paintings, and one of his most Japanese: the flattened branches cropped by the edge of the canvas, the delicate white flowers, the influence of the woodblock prints he loved and collected. It hung over the baby's cot. That child, Vincent Willem van Gogh, grew up to found the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam, where the painting hangs today.
