Chicks Racing on Dogs Bookmark

Two fox terriers at full gallop, each ridden by a chick in a black riding cap, reins in beak, going hell for leather across a bright tangerine ground. It is completely absurd and entirely delightful, and it works because it is drawn so well — those dogs really are running.

Cecil Aldin (1870–1935) was one of Britain's best-loved sporting and animal illustrators, a contemporary and friend of Beatrix Potter's circle, famous for his dogs above all. He understood terriers particularly well: the low head, the flying ears, the sense that the animal is about to do something ill-advised at speed. Adding jockeys in the shape of day-old chicks is the sort of gentle joke that Edwardian illustration did beautifully.
