Alice stands at the little glass table, bottle in hand, the label reading DRINK ME. She has already found the tiny golden key, already seen the garden through the door she cannot fit through. What happens next is one of the best-known moments in English literature.

The illustration is by Sir John Tenniel (1820–1914), the Punch cartoonist whose drawings for Alice's Adventures in Wonderland in 1865 fixed the look of Carroll's world so completely that nobody has quite managed to dislodge it since. Every Alice you have ever pictured — the pinafore, the hair band, the solemn expression — comes from these engravings. This is the later hand-coloured version, softer and warmer than the stark original line blocks.
