Hand-painted flowers from one of the 18th century's most remarkable designers, printed onto tissue soft enough to fold around anything. It's the finishing touch that turns even the simplest parcel into something considered.

About the design

Floral Manuscript features a design by Anna Maria Garthwaite (1688–c.1763), one of the most remarkable textile designers of her era. Working in Spitalfields — then the heart of London's silk-weaving trade — she created over a thousand designs for woven silk, all the more extraordinary because she began in her forties, a woman with no formal training in a trade dominated by men.

Her surviving work is a collection of hand-painted watercolour designs — floral studies she often dated and annotated for the weavers who worked from them — which is where Floral Manuscript takes both its name and its blooms. Her signature was naturalistic florals: flowers, leaves and fruit drawn with such shading and life that they appear almost three-dimensional.
