About the design

The V&A — the Victoria and Albert Museum in London — holds one of the world's finest collections of Japanese dress. V&A Kimono Cranes is a detail taken from a wedding outer kimono (uchikake) in that collection: the richly decorated robe worn over the kimono by a bride.

The crane is one of the most auspicious motifs in Japanese art — a symbol of long life and, because cranes are said to pair for life, of fidelity and a lasting marriage, which is why they so often grace wedding garments.
